As he preps for his headlining tour next week, Smino is keeping up the momentum with the visuals for “Anita.” The track is one of the lead singles from his critically acclaimed debut album blkswn, featuring his soulful verses and production from his right hand monte booker.
Directed by Jean Deaux, the video follows her and Smino on a classic love story, covering everything from games of pool at the bar and riding with the top down. Smino draws inspiration from the recent film Hidden Figures, crafting an ode to the beauty of black women. The Zero Fatigue squad continues to reign with their top-notch, genre-bending content, leaving us eager for more.

Mick Jenkins always comes through with food for thought on each track, using his smooth, yet powerful voice to carry his multilayered metaphors and intricate wordplay. This past fall, the Chicago artist built upon his hot streak with The Healing Component, yet another step forward in his overall artistry and sound.
Although Mick has remained fairly quiet in terms of releases, aside from the Kaytranada-produced “Aurora Borealis,” anxious fans can expect two new projects in later this year. Alongside the announcement of his headlining Spread Love Tour, Mick dropped off a loosie from the archives titled “Pressed For Time (Cross My Mind),” featuring a guest appearance from GoldLink and production from monte booker and THEMpeople. This throwback is more than enough to hold us down while we await more from Mick.

St. Louis’ own Smino is back with some new heat for your speakers. Produced by fellow Zero Fatigue member Monte Booker, “Anita” is another showcase of their Gotenks-like synergy. Whether it be a jazzier cut like this one or “Kajun,” listeners are sure to be in for a treat whenever the two join forces. With his blkswn album on the way, as well as talks of a Zero Fatigue album, Smino’s latest offering is more than enough to hold us down.

As Migos‘ latest banger “Bad and Boujee” dominates the charts, the series of spinoffs associated with the song continues to rise. From the plethora of “raindrop, droptop” reiterations dominating the meme zeitgeist, to a recent endorsement from Renaissance man Childish Gambino himself at the Golden Globe award stage for his show Atlanta, the number of people feeling a little bad and boujee themselves sees no sign of slowing anytime soon.
Adding to the fervor, Monte Booker, the Soulection producer commonly associated with artists such as Smino, recently dropped his own interpretation to the monolithic hit, Taking the lyrics and laying them on top of his own unique production style, the head bopping 808 production of Metro Boomin is replaced by wildly intricate chimes sounding much like melodic raindrops themselves. The uptempo song easily supplements the rapid fire rhymes the Migos are famous for, creating a piece I will probably be listening to more than the original.

Zero Fatigue continues to takeover with each release. Building upon Smino‘s “blkswn,” Monte Booker‘s “Mona Lisa,” and Jean Deaux‘s “Stranger Things,” Jay2 is topping off the bundle of tracks this month with “All Night.” Monte assembles his iconic zilch bounce instrumentation for Jay2 to deliver his swift verses and sing-song hook. With galactic vibes permeating throughout the tune, Zero Fatigue’s latest offering is another showcase of talent from all angles.

I’ve been following Soulection for just under a year now (ever since I saw Esta at UCSD back in January), and being able to watch their movement continue to expand alongside their growing roster has been a true pleasure. With countless exciting things planned for 2017—like talks of a Soulection Festival—I can’t wait to see what else they have in store.
As December unravels, Soulection has provided listeners with a taste of what we can expect in the new year. Two artists from their roster, Zero Fatigue producer Monte Booker and sultry singer naji, have joined forces for a silky track titled “Mona Lisa.” Monte’s iconic production melds with naji’s infectious vocals, creating one of the smoothest listens to drop in a long time.

Earlier this year, Ravyn Lenae catapulted into the spotlight with the rerelease of her Moon Shoes EP. The Chicagoan singer-songwriter has since continued to develop the Zero Fatigue movement alongside Smino and producer Monte Booker, most recently with the release of “Alive.” Monte assembles a soothing bed of piano and synth melodies with an upbeat barrage of percussion, allowing Ravyn’s angelic voice to melt over with ease. Keep your eyes peeled for more from Zero Fatigue as they hone their blend of hip-hop, soul, R&B, and electronic.

Ravyn will also be joining British duo HONNE for a few shows on their fall headlining tour. Peep the dates below and grab your tickets here.

Smino has been the talk of the music scene lately—the St. Louis artist streamlines rapping and singing to generate a sound that is uniquely his, often paired with production from Soulection’s Monte Booker. After racking buzz on SoundCloud, Smino’s breakout blkjuptr EP received a revamp for its arrival to iTunes and Spotify, featuring a new mixing-mastering job from L10 and additional bass riffs from Phoelix.
To top it all off, Smino recently made his music video debut with the project’s title track. Directed by Caves of HOTC and Jean Deaux, the visuals for “blkjuptr” place a modern twist on the story of Adam and Eve.
Peep the striking video and stream the revised blkjuptr below. Also, following his sold-out LA show earlier this month and shortly after his upcoming Lollapalooza performances, Smino will be bringing the blkjuptr experience to Brooklyn on August 2 with his Zerø Fatigue crew.
