It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from dae zhen., but know I couldn’t have clicked that SoundCloud notification any faster, nor have been more excited when I got the chance to indulge in the new track. One of my all-time favorite artists has reunited with his right-hand producer Mike Derenzo for a new tune titled “smoke break.” His angelic hook and poetic verses are backed by a wavering “If I Ever Fall in Love” sample and additional vocals from Joni Payne, melding to form an overall steamy journey. This warm welcome from dae has us excited to hear more in the near future.
Take a “smoke break” with dae zhen. below.
We’ve all been there. Wondering what an ex has been up to since the break-up. So, Joni Payne is here to articulate the feeling with a wall of harmonies and vulnerability.
The track features an array of vocal layers that weave in and out of harmonies, creating a choir-like effect, all set to mellow percussion and a subtle electric guitar. Via SoundCloud, Joni’s inspiration for the track comes from “the boy that showed me DJ Quik in his yellow car”.
Nestle up to your feels and give “All That New Free Time” a few spins while you wax nostalgic about the one that got away.
If you’d like to re-up on some Joni Payne, check out her track “Hold Ya”, produced by Mike Derenzo.
