Jay IDK doesn’t want you to forget about him in 2017. The Maryland native rang in the New Year in the studio laying down bars over Kanye West‘s iconic instrumental for “Famous.” Opening with “in 2015 they thought my rapping with toast, in 2016 I started rocking the boat, in 2017 I’m giving these n****s smoke,” IDK’s freestyle, titled “Hello pt 2” is a declaration of intent to for the New Year.
Jay’s verses touch on everything from money to new age rappers. His 2016 project, The Empty Bank impressed as a demonstration of his raw talent and drive. IDK’s sophomore album provide a shockingly honest commentary on money and the come-up of a young rapper. The Empty Bank and its 2015 predecessor Subtrap were standout albums and concise demonstrations of his talent. Capable of blending the rich commentary both albums offer with catchy deliveries, IDK ranges from conscious compositions to unforgettable bangers.
Jay IDK is promising big things in the new year. Tackling an instrumental with the profile and difficulty of “Famous” is a bold and risky move, but paid off for Jay in a big way, largely due to his confidence and skill set. Jay is relentless for two and a half minutes, letting Kanye’s sample of Sister Nancy‘s “Bam Bam” play him out. After sharing the freestyle Jay underlined his plans for 2017, tweeting “XXL Freshman 2017.”
