Milwaukee’s Thane scored some serious features for his August project Topia. Despite Mick Jenkins and Solei being in the mix, the standout track on the album is without a doubt “Responsibilities,” which showcases Anderson .Paak and BJ The Chicago Kid, a collaboration many fans have been wishing to see more of. BJ links up with .Paak following his feature on Malibu, delivering a collaboration to quell any doubts that the duo’s previous success was a one-off. The two bounce off each other, trading bars so fluently it’s hard to figure out where one ends and the other starts. Thane’s production offers a stellar instrumental employing a jazzy, funky theme that complements the duo’s vocals perfectly.
The intrigue of the song is added to with visuals provided by BRDG and 88rising as the latest episode of their SEEING SOUNDS series. Thane’s track is accompanied by psychedelic digital visuals of eyes, mouths, skulls, and a ton of other vibrant animations. The eclectic visuals come together to run with the song brilliantly, capturing its energy and flow. It’s hard to define what the collective created for “Responsibilities” other than how 88rising itself describes it: a “union of sound through vision.”
88rising’s unprecedented popularity has given it the massive opportunity to bring underground artists to the fore, something the collective is capitalizing on in a impressively unique way. Check out their work-up of “Responsibilities” below, and stream Thane’s album on Soundcloud.
