Following last year’s The Cosmic Journey, Mr Ekow has returned with his latest track, “Liberate.” The London-based emcee/producer recruits talent from around his city for a stacked collab including singer Lateefah, producer Ian Green, and trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey. Ekow commands the mic with his uplifting verses, complemented by Green’s groovy boom bap foundation and Maurice-Grey’s smooth trumpet riffs. Topped off with a sultry hook from Lateefah, “Liberate” channels an unmistakeable positive energy fit for any playlist.
Ekow also shared a few words about the track via email:
“‘Liberate’ began its life back in 2015, when my local church asked me to perform a song around the theme of freedom for a showcase evening. I already had the instrumental from Ian Green lying around and knew it would be a perfect fit. With such a deep groove already in place, I wanted to inject my own upbeat flow while also taking inspiration from great pocket-flow rappers like Q-Tip. Lyrically I just wanted to have fun, while dropping some knowledge at the same time. I tapped up Lateefah, who’s a good friend of mine and she wrote a great chorus.
The track was well received on the night and there was even a horn section who joined me on stage! From then, I knew we had to incorporate that into the track, so I got Sheila Maurice-Grey to add her incredible trumpet. Fast forward to earlier this year and we all came together for what’s been one of my favourite studio sessions ever! I hope everyone enjoys ‘Liberate’ as much as I enjoyed making it!”
